Press and buzz rolls involve hitting a multiple bounce stroke with each hand. Joined together, these strokes sound like one continuous roll. Press rolls are notated as a normal stroke with 1,2 or 3 lines diagonally across the stem, depending on the value of the note. Play all these exercises at 60 BPM. 19a. Using one stick at a time, bounce the stick on the drum aiming for a long, even buzz. Watch the video to help ensure the correct technique. 19b. Now in this second exercise play one stroke after the other aiming to make the bouncing of each stoke overlap. Still at 60 BPM, hit twice for every click. Make sure the initial attack of the stroke isn't too loud to help develop a nice even flow with the roll. 19c. In this third exercise, play triplets as press strokes to help obtain the skill of hitting your right and left hands on the beat. Watch the video to help ensure the correct sticking. 19d. The last exercise involves hitting four strokes per beat. You will be playing 16th notes and what is known as a buzz roll. Once this fourth exercise is comfortable start speeding up all exercises by 5 BPM at a time. These next exercises teach you to start and stop a press roll. This will enable you to develop neat and tight execution of your rolls. 19e. Play this excercise alternating hands. RLRLR..... LRLRL. 19f. This exercise has 8 buzzs and one stop note in each bar. 19g. This exercise uses the same rhythm and arm/wrist motion but alternates between normal notes and buzz notes. |
